notable，noted

這一對形容詞都有“著名的”、“知名的”含義，但詞義有細微的差異，故使用場合有所不同。

★Notable 的意思是“顯著的”或“值得注意的”(remarkable or deserving notice)。經常與它搭配使用的詞有speaker、event、artist、performance、painter、law、affair、 man、woman等。用作名詞時，意為“名士”、“名物”。其同義形容詞是conspicuous、striking或eminent、 renowned;其同義名詞為celebrity.例：

There is a notable(conspicuous)scar on his upper lip.

他的上唇有一個很顯眼的傷疤。

Mr.Song is a notable(=an eminent person).

宋先生是個知名人士。

★Noted 是個中性詞，既可用于好的意味指著名的(renowned)，如：noted musician、noted doctor、noted actor、noted statesman;也可用于壞的意味指惡名昭著的(notorious)，如：noted tyrant、noted bandit.從下列一個例句中，便可看出它所指的不一定是好人好事：

Charles James Fox，the noted statesman，was a notorious gambler.

查爾斯·J·福克斯，一個知名的政治家，卻是個聲名狼藉的賭徒。
