area n. /region n. /zone n. /district n.

area通常用于面積可測量或計算的地區，界限明確，但不指行政區劃。

如：60 years ago, half French people were still living in the rural area.

region常指地理上有天然界限或具有某種特色(如氣候、自然條件)自成一個單位的地區。

如：the Arctic regions北極地區。

另外region也指較大的行政單位。

如：Xinjiang Autonomous Region.

zone通常指地理上的“(地)帶”，尤指圖表上的環形地帶。

如：refugees from the war zone從戰爭地區來的難民。

district指行政劃分的區，比region小，通常指市鎮內的一區。

如：Hai dian district海淀區
