美與真就能夠共存永昌

Sonnet 14

Not from the stars do I judgement pluck,

And yet methinks I have astronomy;

But not to tell of good or evil luck,

Of plagues,of dearths,or seasons’quality; 4

并非從星辰我采集我的推斷;

可是我以為我也精通占星學，

但并非為了推算氣運的通蹇，

以及饑荒、瘟疫或四時的風色; 4

Nor can I fortune to brief minutes tell,

Pointing to each his thunder,rain,and wind,

Or say with princes if it shall go well,

By oft predict that I in heaven find. 8

我也不能為短促的時辰算命，

指出每個時辰的雷電和風雨，

或為國王占卜流年是否亨順，

依據我常從上蒼探得的天機。 8

But from thine eyes my knowledge I derive,

And,constant stars,in them I read such art,

As truth and beauty shall together thrive,

If from thyself to store thou wouldst convert; 12

我的術數只得自你那雙明眸，

恒定的雙星，它們預兆這吉祥;

只要你回心轉意肯儲蓄傳后，

真和美好雙雙偕你永世其昌， 12

Or else of thee this I prognosticate,

Thy end is truth’s and beauty’s doom and date.

要不然關于你我將這樣昭示：

你的末日也就是真和美的死。

methinks 古語，詩歌用語，在我看來，it seems to me.

have astronomy 精通占星術。

astronomy 這里指的不是天文學，而是占星術。

tell 預知，預言。

dearth 饑荒。

quality 特點，特性，本質。

doom 毀滅，死亡。

date 終結。

【欣賞】

這首詩仍是勸好友結婚的，詩人此處吹響的卻是時代的號角。

他吟詠著：我也精通占星學，可不用它來卜命運的吉兇;也沒有從天上得到過啟示，所以，也不去占災卜時、推斷自然變幻和人生時運。

詩人“自有占星的學說”，并不是他懂得中世紀那套占星術，用天上的星辰占卜人們命運的乖順，他是以好友的眼睛作為不變的恒星，從好友的明眸中引出知識，得到學問。

“美與真共同繁滋，只要你能夠轉入永久的倉廩”，只要你放棄獨身的意愿，美與真就能夠共存永昌，否則美與真將隨著你的末日而消亡;這一嶄新的占星術，它為好友占測的是人文主義的常道。
